Hi Wheatsheaf, when are you getting Dirty Deeds AC/DC tribute band back again?
Sheila
Romford 02/07/2009 14:43:32

Just noticed an old post on here about MotorPriest, which says that we died a death after kicking the singer out without telling him. NOT TRUE chaps!! We are still very much about, and been trying to get a gig in your pub. Our old singer just stopped coming to rehearsals, and didn`t turn up for a gig,so we knocked it on the head for a bit, but we`re very much alive and gigging now, and better than we ever were!!!

Don`t know what TattooYou was on the other night (see below) because I cant see anything `iffy` about 22 musicians coming together to raise money as part of the Oxjam week. With three excellent bands playing mostly original music, it was a great showcase of the local talent coming out of the town. So thanks to all who came along for a great night out and helping to raise £185 for Oxfam.

"Cracklin` Rosie" is a bottle of wine. Diamond got the idea for the song from a folk story of an Indian tribe in Northern Canada who had more men than women. On Saturday nights when they go out, the guys all get their girl; the guys without girls get a bottle of Cracklin` Rosie, that`s their girl for the weekend."

The Man Who Sold The World was a b side to Life on Mars (1973) All the Young Dudes was written by Bowie for Ian Hunter of Mott The Hoople when his band were struggling to find a hit; so not a cover for Bowie. Ian Hunter went on to collaborate with Mick Ronson and they toured together in the 70`s. Lulu released a version of T M W S T W too; but Bowie appeared on it and produced it; Nirvana did a cover too; but what did they know? Anyway Hunky Dory were sublime last night; thank you Junior.

Folks Honky Dory,we are still talking with Sparky whom is also in Buzz about a possible date.Motor Priest died a death abouth three years ago when the singer was kicked out by the rest of the band and never told by them. Mr Boris you should have one kind of punky band and rockabilly band every month thats all you will get here.Saturation is not a word to be used lightly around me.

Jenny - perhaps a good idea is not to actually come into the pub with your vehicle as there is limited room for a car or bike within the pub! but to drive past the pub and park where mentioned previously and then walk the 200 yards to the Wheatie..phew, glad i clared that little misunderstanding up..
Smudger

Smudger are you telling the Lady (Jenny)from Nottingham to come in the pub with her car or motorcycle first?????

Agree with RAYMO.It would be nice to see The Zeroes again. Some bands seem to repeat more frequently than others & it makes you wonder why when bands of the quality of The Zeroes seem at the bottom of the pile. Not a gripe just a thought.

Smudger
 09/05/2008 19:58:39

All bands on a Friday and Saturday now cost you ten new pence per drink. So it may cost up a whole 10pence for the first drink of one pint or 20pence for a pint and one half. This new additional pricing level is place on the normal price of the drink i.e (Jack of Legs is £2.90) so after 8.00pm on Fridays and Saturdays it`s £3.00. Ask the Landlord Geoff he knows all about it...

One or more bands will not be seen again next year..We know you like some of them and wish to see them again and again, but we just can not do it.They staff do have a chuckle when the punters rave about a band, it`s amasing what drink can do to your hearing.Sometimes I book a band and know it may not work, with the Pub, just to let you have a different style of music there.I know you love the rock bands but this pub is not just rock rock rock, contrary to popular belief (Sorry to mouth off, but I have been doing the bookings since we started (yes it was only me) and I do like rock music, I did see Led Zep in 1978).I must say a big thank you to all of you that come to the pub for the music and also for the support doing the week too (i.e drinking here and putting money in the juke box too). But the biggest thanks must go to Liz and Geoff, because with out these guys spending money out of their own pockets, you would never have bands here. The money is not great ask the bands, but it is now from the brewery like a lot of other places. Last message is to all the bands, thanks for playing here and I know you can get loads more money at other venues. When someone can tell me the magic potion please mail it here. All the best for the rest of 2007 and rock on 2008. Cheers Junior (born in 1962)

Bob the Builder. You seemed a little subdued Friday evening, were the band not to your taste? Good to hear a Stiff Little Fingers number, if they had done a Smiths number I could have understood you being a tad subdued.

What another great atmospheric night at The Wheatie with "The Corsairs".You can`t beat a bit of Rockabilly with Punk thrown in to get the place jumping.

Steff - like any hotel in any part of the country, people have good experiences and bad. Im sure you will enjoy the Swan Hotel and as its only 5mins walk and 10mins staggering distance from the wheatie you are sure to have a great night when Stray play. The Wheatie is a great venue, im positive you will enjoy our little pub.

The Swan not great, nor is the Hunt(Both rip offs). The Travellodge hockliffe is better and cheaper but you would have to get a taxi back to the place...Have you tried the Bedford this is a pub, or the axe and compass (pub) in heath and reach, these would be better than the SWan
Dave
Leighton Buzzard 16/11/2007 07:43:59

Cheers folks, booked one, Swan Hotel. For anyone who hasn`t seen Stray, they go from strength to strength, and this line up is in my opinion the best line up ever. So get to the Wheatie and catch a real treat for the ears!

Not wishing to harp on about "The Smiths" but if you go into You Tube. The Smiths. & view "The Smiths-BigMouth live Nottingham 21 Oct 86", is it atmospheric or not?? I dont expect "Bob the builder" to agree but does it get to anyone else or am I that sad ?? perhaps "Come On Down" has a word to say on the subject.

As one person that saw The Smiths at Camden Electic ballroom. The Queen is dead and bigmouth strikes again. The pen of Morrissey is not as grand with out the music of Marr or the rest of the band Joyce and Rourke. So I think you should just say "The Smith" not that Vicar in a tu tu

Leighton Buzzard 07/11/2007 08:20:24

Hissing sid. I didnt say I liked Morrissey, I just quoted the lyrics as a piece of poetry, but the best piece is the second paragraph which says "As Anthony said to Cleopatra as he opened a crate of ale: some girls are ...." What do you mean "he is singing about a bloke".

Hi Junior and all. Just browsing old Wheatie bands on YouTube and looked up ex faves, "The Dharmas" - remember them anybody? Well, did you know that Simon Steadman now has a band with the original nam "Steadman" (will have to ask him how he came uo with the name I ever meet him). Seems they have gone places anyway with a recent residency at The Viper Room in Los Angeles and have played on an episode of Smallville too. I remember the days when they did a Radio 1 session and then had to hotfoot it up to our fave pub for a Bank Holiday afternoon session! (Musically speaking!)

Cornelius the Chef - if you are a fully fledged chef then you are most certain to know what a Kebab actually is!! or are you not really a chef and just a common old garden Cook instead? or are you neither? perhaps you are really a road sweeper and gets totally fed up with the half eaten kebabs flung into streets after a good night out on the beer and you just fancy having a rant.
Hugh Mungus
Leighton Buzzard 01/09/2007 16:11:24

Does anybody in their sober right mind eat kebabs anyway ? Seems like s--t food to me or am I missing something ?

Been thinking for some time, since the demise of the band "Out To Lunch" some years ago, have never heard any "Stiff Little Fingers" covers. What about "The Daves/The Bastards/The Informers" adding some to their repertoire ? Nothing wrong with a bit of barbed wire love, what say you Python Pants.

Just remember you get bands free, some you win some you loose. What is wrong with raw music. Not all bands want to play Hendrix type music. All credit to "The Bastards" they could have have cancelled but they turned up & did their best.

Music lesson of the week.Once upon a time when BBC radio one was the channel to listen too (Rock on BBC radio Six now and late night BBC radio two).In 1981 Tony Blackburn played Streets on London and found out what the "b side" was and said it was disgusting and need to be banned. The next step was the Police became involved and had all copies that had not been sold destroyed. So if you have a copy of Streets of London with the b-side being "so What" you have some extra pocket money.

Junior, It is great to hear from you. I hope you are well. I am not sure what is going on with Baby Strange. I have not spoken to any of those guys in months. The last thing I heard was that everyone left except Eric and Ryan. I have not seen any gigs since they left the tour. You might reach them at babystrange@spinfinder.com to get a more official word on that. I plan to start up with some new groups after the summer. Keep in touch. Give my best to Geoff and everyone there. Rock-Benny

The Peartree caused us to peer attentively over our horn-rims. Not being prudish of course, gosh haven`t we read and heard it all between the libary book-shelves, however, the red-nose "entertainment" was - well, NOT. We do confess to smuggishly revelling the dirty ditty - not that we allowed any to perceived our churlish delight. Apart from that the music was typical bashed-out non-interpreted covers.

You guys were around the table talk too fast for me to understand, and you all explained that you had problems when you right across to Glasgow with your accents. The Resonators were the biz, good to see Smudger, Raymo, Bob the Builder, Mr.Grumpy, Cordula, Lynton & Big Dave enjoying themselves together with lots of other Punk/New Wave enthusiasts. It does prove Punk bands go down a storm at The Wheatie. Thanks Junior for putting them on.

Yes - hunky Dory were bloody fab, we really enjoyed them! Junior does a great job trying to cater for all tastes ( with the exception of not getting the Hoggz back.....)so don`t moan you lot!If you can do better I am sure he`d love a break.

I could understand people complaining if they were paying to see a band, remember it`s all free, if it wasn`t for The Wheatie & Junior the live music scene locally would be pretty poor.

Message from Soul Connection. Thanks again to the customers and staff of The Wheatie for yet another great night on 24th. Particular thanks to those who came over for a chat at the end of the night....it only goes to show that classic soul music still has a strong following. Hopefully see you all again in the not too distant future.

Sorry to have missed "Hunky Dory", super evening apparently, but sickness vouchers outweighed enjoyment vouchers. Looking forward to "The Resonators". Doris I would get a T-Shirt but can`t get one miserable enough. As for "The Hoggz" its your choice.

Dave - quite poissibly your `eyes are slightly shut` in your views on Juniors Policy for bands. I agree with Mr Grumpy, unusual i know, but having a band on twice a year or even once does give you that `can`t wait to see them` feeling. If bands played a regular `once a month slot` i feel the wheatie would lose that feel that it has.. Further, the Plough is just starting its band night so at 1st they need to show people and bands what they can offer. I`m sure once they have a year under their belt then their gig list will be similar to the wheatie. One final point Dave, remember - it`s free and Junior gets some cracking bands.
Smudger

RAYMO
 22/02/2007 16:56:12

A band playing on a too regular basis will not have that "can`t wait to see them again" feeling. Juniors policy of once a year or slighly less works well.
Mr.Grumpy
 22/02/2007 16:40:07

I think that the bands that play The Plough would only get to play The Wheatie once a year..Which seems to be the Wheatie policy, except for a couple of bands. Some bands seem to be playing the Plough every month or every other month...The wheatie policy may not be liked by most of us,but maybe the Bertie Bassett policy works for that Junior guy..... Rock on both The Plough and The Wheatie..

My Band of the year was Corb Lund get bunch of chaps and could have played for 3 hours if we had let them. My disappointment of the year was The Deadstring Brothers after the first time they played here (my best band of 2005) and then this time just band internal problems. As per every year we have a load of bands that can deliver the goods..The other highlight was The Go Getters that was a treat and a half to have thoses boys play our small stage. Thanks to everyone thats supports us evry week or once a month or year...Sorry about my absents in the last three months on Tuesdays but i`ve a new job and some of the work has meant I have been working late, i hope in 2007 to clear this problem up.

Big Bob....I`m sorry to say we are not in the same league at The Horn`s in Watford as in the money league status..I think we have better bands as some of ours play original music and we don`t have covers/tribute band 99% of the times..I would be biaised to that fact, won`t I. The only time we have tribute bands seems to be for warm up`s or their first starting out..We have some exceptions being Funky Monks and Pistols whom seem to like the place and do it for less money that they can get else where..Ask all the bands why they would (want to) play here and I know they can get a better money at other venues...As always we treat the bands with some respect (like human beings) and hope to get it back..I still have no answer to why they want to and still want to come back and I keep saying ask them the secret of The Wheatsheaf North Street Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire...

Please note one and all I will not be around too much in the next couple of months (whats new I hear you say)..Time for some sun and beer as well as real working taking over yet again. All the dates for Sept 2006 are 99% there and Oct 2006 is 100% there too. We have at least three new bands in those periods of time...I has been getting much harder to slot bands in and have your old fav`s too. I know bands are becoming upset too with only have one slot a year and knowing that some bands have more than that...It is getting harder every year (to play god) but the lighting will be striking a couple more bands next (sorry)..In Oct the pub will having been hosting music for over 17 years and yes it has been me doing the bookings all those years, I did not have gray hair then, but at least i`ve still got a mop..Watch out in Nov 2006 we may have an old band that have not played here for 8 to 10 years, some of you will remember them most of you will not.. Dear Mr Grumpy (would be nice to see the real name).I know I`m at fault for this lack of information and I know I would be the first to say this is not the proffessional way to run a promotion. At normal job until 16:30hrs get home at 18:00hrs have a shower plus cook tea and then be at the pub before 20:00hrs work in pub until 01:00hrs and clean up.Go to bed at 03:00hrs get up at 07:30hrs to repair my computer and then help out a friend with their kitchen until 16:30hrs. Steve : Giles and the band had to cancell the 26th but did play last friday .Sorry about that , but these things happen in the world of rock n roll. Don`t the pub just know it.

The biggest thing I miss about LB is The Wheatie - moved away 5 years ago and had some of the best nights out ever in that there place. Hi to Liz and Geoff , Junior , Julian. Best gigs there ever? Newcranes, Whisky Priests, Seven Little Sisters, TATT, Press Gang, Reef, The Kays (Kula Shaker), Liberty Cage, Special Brew, The Humpff Family, Tower Struck Down - I could go on and on. Keep up the good work - you are a great asset to Leighton Boozehard!!! It`s only when you move to another town that you realise how much you take a pub like The Wheatie for granted. Keep supporting it everybody!! Often check up on the gig list to see what I`m missing!!! Darren

 10/05/2006 16:37:53

Hi guys, Thanks for your comments on Dirty Deeds. We as a band always enjoy the Weatsheaf. I think a big thankyou to Junior, Geoff and Liz is in order for making this pub so successful over the years. I have gigged this pub for 17+ years as.. Tough at The Top..Ambush...and now Dirty Deeds, and it goes from strength to strength. Great to see a venue going strong especially as there are many good venues changing hands and turning into more eating holes! Look forward to our return sometime. Steve.

The area around Leighton Buzzard and the town itself have some A1 mus o`s. Looks like we maybe a magnet for the lost souls of music. Monday was a fine example. Not saying why... Please please check out May 2006,we have again attracted some of the best bands around...I think for the past couple of years our standard of bands has gone up a couple of runs on the ladder. We are cooking with higher grade gas at the moment..Thanks Liz and Geoff for the money for the bands, once again please note it`s not the brewery that supplies the funds its the landlady and landlord own pocket/wallet. keep on rockin in the free world

Came down on the off chance of seeing a good band on friday, Well....had the time of our lives! What a great night and the Stray band were one of the best bands I have ever seen, they absolutly rocked!!! If you get them back again then please put out an ad in the paper or "Go" or something. I was blown away that we didn`t have to pay either. I think the Wheatie will now become my (not so) local. Cheers for a great night. Steve

Hi Junior, Just to say thanks for the gig on Friday 7th April. We had a great time and were made to feel very welcome by your regulars. I hope they enjoyed what was a last minute line up and we hope to see you all again sometime in the future. Nice community singing at the end of the gig by the way. Regards Ian (The Bullfrogs).

The Pistols - April 8th 2006...Well what can i say, we were treated to a slice of 1976/77 at it`s best. These guys did the Sex Pistols justice, classic punk tracks from Pretty Vacant to Sid doing My Way (which brought the house down) From the 1st song to the last it was pure nostalgia. If your were unfortunate to be born too late for the punk era then you witnessed what it was really like to be at the cutting edge of the punk scene. Looking forward to seeing the Pistols back at the Wheatie soon. 10/10

Hello Folks...I`m sorry I`ve not been about for the last couple of tuesdays for bookings. The job that pays the mortgage has been taking over and will do until about end of April 2006. I will be still cover the booking in that time. If you do want to contact me send the message to buzzardwheat@aol.com, don`t hold your breath for a reply. just to claify the start time for bands on Friday and saturdays we aould like the bands to start at 9.45pm stop 10.30pm (1st set). start 11.00pm and stop playing all musical notes on 12.00 or midnight, this includes encores...Once again thanks for the support from the bands and the people whom pay the money across the bar which then pays the bands...

Thank you for all your kind comments! At least 25% of RECOVERY can usually be found in a dark corner of The Wheatie on a friday or saturday night so if you want a CD or future gig details feel free to ask or see our web site! See you all soon! x
Recovery
 27/01/2006 10:39:58

It was well worth the wait!! I`ve been looking forward to seeing Recovery at the Wheatie ever since the last time. Come this time next year you probably won`t be able to hear Recovery play live without frantic calls to ticket offices, so I`m fully glad to have been there. Every track has a sweet kick without being just like the last one. I don`t know how they manage to pull out tune after top tune, all night. Brilliant. Rock on Recovery, and save that whale!!

 18/01/2006 11:08:29

Feb 2006 is now fully booked, which makes a change for me.This month has only got two new bands and they are on a wednesday.I will try to have at least two new bands a month with all your old fav`s. Of course this will mean that I may loss some bands that we beleive are not up to standard (you may disagree) and some bands will have more than one gig (you may not agree with this either). As I always say there are more than 50% of the bands that I do not like their brand of music (I think most people know by know covers bands are not to my taste). Feb kicks off with rock n roll(3rd) then stadium rock covers(4th), then rock 80`s to 2000 (10th), then roots/alt country (11th), original cow poking with brass (17th),(18th) funky rock but they say it`s rock, funk metal with attiude (24th) this is a new band for us, and last a good old basic rock band (25th). March is almost booked as you will see from the web site and we have one or two great dates in there. Please note for this little place to get some of the bands we do get is pretty amazing, i don`t know how we do it each month but we do.....all the best music people......... Junior (still waiting for someone to take over this job of organising bands for this pleasent little pub/venue)
